  • What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It emphasizes the use of leverage and technique to control and submit opponents.
  • Do I need prior martial arts experience to join?
No, our programs are designed for all levels, from complete beginners to advanced competitors.
  • What should I wear to my first class?
Wearing a Gi (BJJ Uniform) will allow you to get the most out of your class but isn't required. Comfortable workout clothes will work. A loaner Gi may be available during a trial period. If you continue, you may want to invest in a quality Gi. We can assist you in selecting the Gi that is best for you.
  • Is BJJ safe for beginners?
Yes, safety is our top priority. Our classes are structured to ensure beginners, and everyone, learn techniques safely under expert supervision. For this reason, we refuse to compromise any of our safety or hygiene standards.
  • How often should I train to see progress?
Training frequency depends on your goals and schedule. Typically, 2-3 times a week is recommended for consistent progress. Competing and targeted private sessions can accelerate progress.
  • What are the benefits of training BJJ?
BJJ training offers numerous benefits, including improved physical fitness, increased confidence, effective self-defense skills, stress relief, and a supportive community.
  • Do I need to be in shape to start BJJ?
No, you don't need to be in top physical condition to start. BJJ training will help you improve your fitness level over time. Our students have used BJJ to gain muscle and athleticism, lose weight and feel healthy, increase flexibility, and reduce stress. BJJ is exceptional for anyone looking to transform themselves in a fun and engaging way. See Professor Christopher Colley's story on our Lineage and Instructor page for a great example.
  • Can women train BJJ?
Absolutely! BJJ is highly effective for women’s self-defense, and our women's program is specifically designed to create a safe and empowering environment for female practitioners. In addition to our group classes, we offer women-only self-defense seminars and programs to ensure the most conducive learning environment.
  • How are classes structured?
Classes are typically 60-90 minutes (depending on the level). They consist of a warm-up (light calisthenics and BJJ movements) , followed by technique instruction (Instructor demonstrated and explained technique(s), drilling (students practicing the demonstrated technique(s) with intermittent instructor refinements. Some classes will end with live sparring or positional training.

  • What etiquette or gym rules should I be aware of?
The safety of every person on the mat is EVERYONE'S number 1 priority. Respect should be given and demanded. We never walk with our shoes on the mat or our bare feet off the mat. This is an important hygiene rule that keeps us safe. We start each class with a clean and fresh Gi. (Clean, dry, unstained, no holes or loose patches) We bow as we enter and leave the mat We face the rear of the class when fixing our uniforms We never eat or chew gum while on the mat. (this is both a hygiene and safety rule) We are here to learn, grow and help each other, remember the person in front and next to you is a teammate not an enemy or opponent. We refer to black belts as professor and lower belt instructors as coach. We give the professor our undivided attention while he/she is instructing. We bow to the instructor at the start and end of each class. We thank each person we train with each class. Remember to have FUN!
